About the Opossum

Hey!

I'm Sarah, the brain and hands behind everything you see on this website. I started Porch Opossum Art Experiments at the age of 17 when I became obsessed with tie dye. Over my 9 years in business, I have shifted my focus to altering and repairing used clothes in order to create my art while also lessening the environmental impact of fast fashion. I also find that by using exclusively second-hand clothing, I can offer higher quality items at a lesser cost to you than if I was buying new wholesale blanks to dye, so everybody wins!

I source clothes from thrift stores, friends’ closet purges, yard sales, parking lots and the sides of roads- whenever I leave the house I am on the hunt for abandoned or unwanted clothing! All clothes are washed at least twice before being put up for sale, and I only sell pieces that pass my own standard of sanitation (If I wouldn’t wear it myself, I won’t try to sell it to you!)

Ceramics

Through my ceramic work I hope to offer you something ethically made that brings joy. I love working with clay and am very thankful that my work has been well received thus far. My ceramic pieces are hand built, never molded or slipcast; each detail is handcarved and each piece completely unique. Pieces made for use with food or drink are always correctly fired using professional grade food-safe glazes.

I strongly believe that having handmade, unique, and ethically (as much as possible) crafted items in our daily lives enhance quality of life and break the monotony of mass produced, impersonal home décor and fashion. Through my work, I hope to give you options that fit your lifestyle without asking you to ignore your values.
