The first Cowpoke Opossum had its origins when I was unloading my kiln and accidentally broke an ear off of a clay marsupial. I was distraught, until I recalled the old saying “God never cuts off an ear without providing a really cool hat,” and the wildest opossum in the west was born!
Each opossum is handbuilt and one of a kind. I apply the different textures with a variety of simple hand tools and hollow the inside to reduce weight and allow for better results during the initial firing. The hats are hand-crafted and fired separately, and then glazed and fused to the opossum’s cranium during the 2nd and final firing. It’s a lot of work; but the resulting little friends are well worth the effort!
